Generative art, the new avant-garde of the NFT ecosystem.

The Goose, by Dmitri Cherniak

Within the world of crypto art, there is a wide variety of styles, trends and types of art, minted as NFT to the blockchain. However, there is a particular type of art, which has existed since before the existence of crypto art, and has an absolutely digital origin, it is generative art.

What is generative art?

For those who are not very familiar with the subject, I must clarify in a simple way, that basically it is a type of art, where the artwork is created by writing a code on a computer, that is, the artwork is the result of that written code, mostly in JavaScript code, but in some case also PYTHON

There are platforms designed for this purpose, with a wide variety of utilities and resource libraries, which make it easier for artists to create their works by writing their code. The best known and widely used is p5.js, a platform that runs in the JavaScript language and has a library with multiple sizes of canvases, colors, strokes, shapes, textures, in short, a complete universe of available resources. Of course, to use all this, you must know the JavaScript language previously and start designing the works.

In generative art, the end result is an image, although in some more sophisticated cases an animation or video. But always everything is created from the computer with these aforementioned tools.

Generative art is considered a type of art born from computer language, it is also a synthesis between science and creativity, and it should be noted that in the creation of this type of art, there is a random element linked to the final result, In other words, the artist has an idea of what the result will be like, but on many occasions it can vary a bit, since they are creation tools, where there are certain elements that are left to chance or arise spontaneously.

Generative art as crypto art.

Going back to the link between generative art and the NFT ecosystem, we find that there are platforms that are dedicated exclusively to generative art, in NFT format, such as the emblematic case of ARTBLOCKS, although it is not the only one, we will focus on this one, because since 2021, a very particular fact began to occur, auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's, began to include generative art in their crypto art auctions, reaching impressive prices, such as the latest work by Dmitri Cherniak, The Goose, sold at $5.4 million, an incredible price for a generative work of art.

The Goose, is part of Cherniak's collection Ringers (#879) in ARTBLOCKS, and was acquired in June of this year by the emblematic crypto art collector Punk6529, who is a fervent defender and promoter of the NFT ecosystem since its inception.

But it is important to note that previously another work from this collection, Ringers, was sold in 2021, in another auction for a value of more than $7 million.

It is worth asking what leads the most important auction houses to include ARTBLOCKS NFTs? Well, it turns out that ARTBLOCKS has its own smart contracts, and although it uses marketplaces like Opensea to display and sell its NFTs, it does not depend on Opensea, this gives them a huge advantage, since they have full control over their assets. On the other hand, ARTBLOCKS does a very rigorous job in the selection and curation processes of all its artists, which allows them to have a wide variety and quality of types of artworks, and artists on their platform.

As you may have noticed, platforms like ARTBLOCKS are like a micro world, within the NFT ecosystem, where the vast majority of the artists that are there also sell their work at very good prices, and this has existed for a long time, but now with this subject of the auctions, it began to be known.

Generative art is not new, it has its origins since languages such as JavaScript and its predecessors appeared in the computer world. For many lovers of art and computer science, it has always been a dream to unite both worlds, and generative art is the bridge that unites computer science with the creative world of art.

The new NFT vanguard

With this rise of generative art, and its position within the NFT ecosystem, many experts in the crypto world speak of the new vanguard of the NTF ecosystem, where art will finally prevail over PFPs such as apes, crypto punks, cats, etc.

Undoubtedly, the history of new art is in full swing, we are seeing and living it, and generative art is establishing itself with quality, not to mention its long existence within the world of digital art.

Only time will tell if it is something ephemeral or if we are truly at the dawn of the most important avant-garde, of 21st century art.
